Megadyne Information Systems London

London Transport, the provider of public transport services for the city of London, selected Megadyne's PARIS® software to implement its ROUTES system. ROUTES (Rail Omnibus Underground Travel Enquiry System) is a computerized Travel Enquiry System that provides all the information needed to respond to detailed questions about any journey by public transport in London. It has been in operation since 1996

London Transport consists of some 460 underground trains serving 272 stations (including 25 owned by British Rail) and 254 miles of route, carrying some 2.5 million passengers every working weekday. Some 5,000 buses on 600 routes carry 3.7 million passengers a day. The network covers 631 square miles and employees a staff of 37,500.

The implementation included a number of significant enhancements including a graphical user interface, a client-server architecture and on-screen map graphics.

In London, PARIS® runs on UNIX platforms from Hewlett-Packard (HP-9000) and uses Oracle as the database management system. Map support is provided using the GDSC GIS. The system is accessed by trained call center enquiry staff using X terminals and by the general public through touch-screen kiosks.
